Kremlin representative cites advances amid trilateral negotiations as territorial demands remain central.

On Thursday, Kirill Dmitriev, a special envoy of the Russian presidency, said there have been “certain advances” in talks between Russia, Ukraine and the United States taking place in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

“European and U.K. warmongers are constantly trying to interfere in this process. And the more attempts of this kind occur, the more we see that there is indeed progress and a positive advance,” Dmitriev commented.

He also said Russian diplomats are “working actively” with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to restore economic relations between Russia and the United States, including through the Russian-U.S. group on economic cooperation.

The trilateral talks, which began Wednesday and are set to conclude on Thursday, are part of diplomatic efforts aimed at reaching a political settlement to the conflict in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian delegation is led by Rustem Umerov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, and includes the head of the presidential office, Kyrylo Budanov; the leader of Ukraine’s parliamentary majority group, Davyd Arakhamia; and the chief of the General Staff, Andrii Hnatov.

The Russian delegation, which is the same one that took part in talks held in Abu Dhabi on Jan. 23 and 24, is headed by Adm. Igor Kostyukov, chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.

On Wednesday, the Kremlin reiterated that “the doors to a peaceful solution are open” and that Moscow’s position “is very clear.” The territorial issue remains paramount for Russia, which demands, as its main condition, the withdrawal of all Ukrainian forces from the Donbas region.
